Daily Recap, TABLA

Day One, TABLA 2019

BY TAYLOR FAHEY | JUNIOR COUNSELOR

Team Awesome Basketball Leadership Academy kicked off today with the leadership theme of “Finding Your Voice”. If you walked by the gym sometime today you would hear exactly that! It isn’t just a gym of silence and occasional squeaking shoes…. Nope, it is a gym filled with campers eager to find their voice and willing to step outside of their comfort zone to do so.

Coach Kerstin clarified what “Finding Your Voice” means, emphasizing that everybody has different leadership styles. She explained five specific leaders: performance, locker room, social, organizational, and reserve. The campers were challenged to think about which leadership style best describes them.

The campers kept high energy through ball handling, a rebound-outlet drill, and a fast break drill.

University of Washington’s guard, Missy Peterson, was the guest trainer and speaker today. She demonstrated a UW drill and shared her story and journey as a collegiate athlete. Missy also answered questions from the campers and signed t-shirts.

After finishing up lunch the campers had a mental skills workshop lead by Kadee Gray. Basketball is not purely a physical game, and today the campers embraced their workshop, “Mindfulness: Controlling our Focus”. There was an emphasis on staying in the zone by choosing where to focus your energy.

2:30 this afternoon marked an important moment as the campers met their assigned teams of four and Junior Counselor for the TABLA 3-on-3 Tournament of Champions. Stay tuned for the championship game on Friday!

At the end of camp today prizes were handed out. Grace Mckillop won a raffle off Instagram and claimed her autographed Breanna Stewart jersey. McKenna Leith won a signed photo of Sue Bird from the raffle of the first 15 campers signed up. Also, we can’t forget to congratulate our campers of the day Nikki Bowen and Alex Enstad!
