We went out with a bang as TABLA headed to Seattle to spend the last day of camp in the Key Arena and at the Seattle Storm game! Throughout the course of the day, we had numerous star-struck, heart-stopping moments as we ran into Breanna Stewart, Alysha Clark, Jewell Lloyd, Sami Whitcomb, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, and Sue Bird! The campers were able to play on Key Arena court doing some drills and a couple five on five games using the jumbotron for score and playing music through the speakers. Team Bea took home a defining championship with team work, ball movement, and fast breaks [Coach Bea added this line herself]. Playing on the Storm court was an amazing opportunity and one that will not soon be forgotten!
After our time on the court we listened to a member of the social development department of the Seattle Storm speak about his experience and what all he does in his job with the team. After eating lunch downtown, we passed out Seattle Storm swag bags to the award winners from TABLA 2018. Most inspiring went to Myana Calloway, most growth went to Rowan Schaberg, and A+ teammate went to Alicia Goetz. The 2 on 2 champions (Hayley and Alexis) and 3-on 3-champions (Kansas City Tornados: Gabby, Megan, and Joy) also received the swag bags.
Team Awesome Basketball Leadership Academy sold 50/50 raffle tickets before the game through halftime and was able to raise a whopping $2,122 for TABLA, the most of any Storm games this season (and rumor has it: ever). This was a very successful fundraiser and will allow the academy to grant scholarships to players in need for following camps! 107 people came to the game with TABLA, in the biggest sold-out game in four years. The atmosphere was electric as the Seattle Storm beat out the Minnesota Lynx to clinch a playoff spot! After the game, TABLA campers got the chance to get autographs from Noelee Quinn and Courtney Paris.
This week was full of growth on the court and the rise of great leaders. The campers came up with some incredible social justice projects and the funds raised today may also help fund some of these projects. TABLA 2018 was a tremendous success and we are all excited for the success in store for these young women and for more wonderful TABLA camps in the future! With much thanks to Stop Action Photography, photographs for the entire week are available for viewing and purchase HERE.
Our work is never done! We hope to see you at our 4th Annual Awesome 3-on-3 Jam on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018. We’d love to raise funds for one or two of our camper community projects – send me your applications by October 1st! Good luck to everyone this coming season. Play, lead, and inspire. See you all soon!
[A note from Coach Bea] – A huge thank you to our community, parents, volunteers, sponsors, speakers and, most of all, our awesome and tireless Junior Counselors: this week would not have happened without the work and generosity and energy of at least fifty people, if not more. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for making this academy accessible for all girls passionate about basketball and leadership, thank you for helping us touch the lives of our campers. Thank you.
