TABLA 2018: Day 1

Today marked a great start to the Team Awesome Basketball Leadership Academy! The leadership theme for Day One was “Finding your voice”. Campers participated in activities such as the Human knot and Hula tunnel to get the day started which demonstrated the importance of effective communication and other characteristics that are important in a good leader.

The morning consisted of many drills from ball handling to defensive positioning and one on one moves to the basket. Jordan Leith, our 8th grader from Meadowdale, took home the round-the-world one-on-one tournament, as well as a Sue Bird and Lindsay Whalen signed basketball!

After lunch, the campers had two different workshops. The first workshop explored social justice and focused on the platform professional athletes have to address social justice. The second workshop was delivered by the guest coach for the day, Hannah Olson from the UW center for Leadership in Athletics, who talked about the importance of “ME in TEAM” and the different styles of leadership people can have.

To finish off day one, campers participated in more basketball focused drills covering ball handling, shooting and rebounding and began the TABLA 3-on-3 Tournament of Champions. Each camper was assigned a team with four campers and a Junior Counselor to compete against each other for a spot in the tournament championship on Wednesday. Day One was a huge success and everyone is excited for a fun week of leadership and basketball!
