Working with Team Awesome Basketball Leadership Academy (TABLA) was such an enriching experience for me. When I was younger I went to a Western Washington University basketball camp where the college players were the counselors. I looked up to them so much and knew I wanted to take the inspiration and support from them and pay it forward. When I heard about TABLA and their Junior Counselor program, I was immediately interested. Not only did being a junior counselor for TABLA mean I could help younger athletes with their game, but it also meant I would be a part of a much bigger movement.
TABLA isn’t just another skills camp! Unlike camps I’ve been to, TABLA makes it their mission to empower and inspire others by integrating basketball, leadership, and life skills to a level that everyone participating will have something to take away. Through guest speakers and advocacy workshops, I realized that although we’ve come so far already, there is SO much more work to be done to advocate for women’s sports! I had a lot to take away from my experience as a JC, but the best part was helping the younger athletes build their confidence and hone in on their basketball and leadership skills. In doing so, I was encouraged to step out of my own comfort zone which took my leadership up to the next level.
The best part about TABLA is that it strives to empower young women. I believe the academy has started a ripple effect whose impact will change the athletic world.
Junior Counselor applications are now open to current college student-athletes or recent graduates from any NCAA or NAIA divisions. Join us for a unique, extraordinary opportunity to empower the next generations of girls in sports!
