TABLA Camp: Day Four

By Charli Elliott, TABLA Junior Counselor

Today began, as it usually does at TABLA camps, with teamwork. In the most challenging activity yet, the campers had to work together to navigate a obstacle course, blind-folded. After the chaos, confusion and wild gesturing subsided, the girls examined how crucial communication is, on and off the basketball court.

Then they hit the court, working to take the earlier lesson of communication into the rest of the day. While doing fast break drills and post to guard drills, the campers learned key phrases to help out their teammates, such as “on your left!”, “trail!”, and “kick!”. Then it was time for the Division/Regional tournament play. The Golden State Warriors took the top seed in today’s tournament, but tomorrow’s championship is up for the taking.

The day ended with an Advocacy Workshop. The girls worked together to learn about speaking up for their sport, whether that means talking to athletic directors, coaches, administration or peers. The afternoon also dealt with the heavier topic of emotional and physical abuse in relationships. The ONE LOVE workshop was lead by Claire Durrell, a previous guest speaker, who educated the girls about red flags in abusive relationships and the resources they have in their lives.

As camp comes to a close tomorrow, we’d love to invite the community to come participate in workshops, watch an exhibition game between the coaches and watch the campers vie for the state championship.
