Mentorship Program: December Highlights and Gallery

…And when people say basketball madness begins in March, we beg to differ…

Psychologist and former UPS point guard Laura Hirsch delivered a wonderful “Mindfulness Session” at UW’s Center for Leadership in Athletics. The girls watched a footage of “Bad Boy” Isaiah Thomas’s historical 25-point third quarter in the NBA Finals against the Lakers, hobbling on a sprained ankle. Talking about the mystery and beauty of the power of the mind in sports, the girls practiced breathing and focusing exercises, shared pre-game routines, and learned to get out of mental traps. Thanks Laura!

Our mentees went out and put on a show to wrap up the year 2014! Junior Lily DiPietro’s consistently impressive performance leads Bishop Blanchet Braves to wins over Edmonds-Woodway, Beamer, and Wilson, with Julia Leon and Ella DiPietro contributing to a still undefeated record. For Edmonds-Woodway, whose only loss came from a non-league game against Blanchet, guard Mady Burdett averages close to a double-double in rebounds and points, and still manages to dish out 5 assists a game; she was also named to Player of the Game against Mountlake Terrace. Lily Gustafson put in incredible stats for Shorewood, especially when Mentor Amy is there, with 26 points and 15 rebounds against Lake Stevens, and 24 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists in win against rival Shorecrest. Shortly after Mentor Ashley told her to be a bit more selfish, Melina Monlux put in career-high 24 points for Ballard in the team’s upset over 4A school Kamiak over the holidays. Seattle Academy’s Sarah Goh led her team to a defining victory in SAAS’s Basketball Mania night, winning Player of the Game honor. Finally, Sam Conroy has been pulled up to varsity as a sophomore for a few games, and her undefeated JV squad couldn’t have done it without her, especially with her incredible performance against previously undefeated Edmonds-Woodway team! Our mentors look forward to fanning out in chase of these amazing games! See ya there!
